About the Health Informatics Centre (HIC)

The Health Informatics Centre (HIC) operates as a Trusted Research Environment (TRE) for the Scottish Government, NHS Fife and NHS Tayside health board regions. It focuses on the secure handling of sensitive data by operating to rigorous standards including DEA accreditation and ISO27001. The TRE is a specifically designed secure cloud computing environment for data analyses.

Established in 2004 at the University of Dundee, HIC is a leader in secure data management and innovation. For more than 22 years, it has supported researchers, academia, clinical trial units, trusted research environments, data controllers, industry partners, and organisations of all kinds in transforming data into world leading research outcomes.

Datasets available

HIC hosts a range of linkable routinely-collected administrative health datasets which covers the whole population of Tayside and Fife – approximately 800,000 people.

This includes Electronic Health Records and Non-Clinical Data (e.g. Social Care), such as:

  • Community-dispensed prescribing

  • Hospital stays, diagnoses, interventions and treatments

  • Lab results / Oncology / Medical images / Biorepositories

  • Demographics & mortality

  • Local specialist clinical data

  • Disease registries including diabetes, cancer and renal

  • Various research gathered resources including genomics

  • A brief description of your project idea or even a project protocol if you have it

  • An idea on how HIC can identify the right people for your cohort

  • Details of any new or external dataset you want HIC to link to
