The team behind the Data in Biological Research project are using the computer game Minecraft to encourage young people to explore pandemic preparedness and how large-scale data can be used to inform policy.

The project team have been trialling the activity with children and families at events across Scotland, including the Fife STEM Futures Festival in June 2023 and the Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival in July. The team have also partnered with the Science Skills Academy to reach young people in the Highlands.

Aiming to reach young people in a range of locations, the team are using Minecraft to present complex ideas in an engaging, accessible way. They’ll focus on giving young people the opportunity to explore and discuss data in public health research, including the challenges and ethical considerations in making future decisions.

The insights uncovered by the team will be shared with researchers to feed into their work and develop collaborative approaches with young people.
